SMS short code is an industry approved shorter 5 or 6 digit numbers (Short code) vs the longer 10 digit numbers (Long code) used to pass the text messages from carrier networks to end users. Carriers do not approve the long codes and therefore prefer clients to use short codes to deliver SMS to end users.
